Our Bristol clinic specialises in musculoskeletal (MSK) MRI scans. Patients who attend our Bristol MRI clinic often include:
If you’re unsure whether an MRI is right for your symptoms, our team can help you decide before booking.
Our Bristol clinic runs a 0.3T MSK-focused open MRI scanner, designed specifically for bones, joints, and soft tissues.
We commonly scan:
Lumbar spine
Cervical spine
Sacroiliac joints / sacrum
Shoulders
Knees
Hips
Ankles
Wrists and elbows
We do not scan:
Brain or head
Internal organs
Cancer-related imaging
These types of scans require a different closed MRI system, typically found in hospital settings.
Yes. Our Bristol clinic uses a fully open MRI scanner, meaning you are not enclosed in a narrow tunnel. This makes the experience far more comfortable for patients who feel anxious, claustrophobic, or uncomfortable in confined spaces.
Scans are also shorter, typically lasting 15–30 minutes, depending on the area being scanned.

If you’re unsure how scans are priced (for example, what counts as one body part), our team can explain this clearly before you book.
Your scan is reviewed by a specialist radiologist
A written report is provided within 72 working hours*
Images can be supplied on disc if required
Reports can be shared with your GP, physiotherapist, or specialist
Results are not usually discussed immediately after the scan, but you’ll receive clear documentation you can use for follow-up care.
*72 hours refers to working hours and excludes weekends.

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It’s a safe, painless, and non-invasive way to capture detailed images of structures inside the body. It’s commonly used to investigate joint pain, spinal issues, soft tissue injuries, and suspected MSK conditions.
Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use radiation.
At Lyfe health we provide MRI’s for all joints and bones of the body, including the spine, but we don’t cover head scans, cancer scans, or internal organs.

We run a 0.3T MSK focused Open MRI scanner, ensuring ease of access and self-referral, in a high street location. The benefit of this scanner is it allows fast access to MRI diagnostics in a non-hospital setting that also provides access to additional services such as joint injections, interventions for spinal disc injuries, and full rehabilitation services, including Physiotherapy and Reformer Pilates. We do not offer some types of scans such as those for the internal organs or brain, as these require a different type of Closed 3T MRI machine, usually only located in Hospital Secondary Care settings.
Our open MRI scanner provides a more open and less confining experience for patients compared to traditional closed MRI scanners. Unlike traditional closed MRI scanners, which can be narrow and enclosed, open MRI scanners have a more open and spacious design. They do not fully enclose the patient and are therefore more accommodating for patients who may experience claustrophobia or discomfort in a confined space.
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is not harmful because it relies on the use of strong magnetic fields and radio waves, rather than ionizing radiation like X-rays or CT scans. These magnetic fields and radio waves are non-ionizing, meaning they do not have enough energy to break chemical bonds or damage cellular structures in the body. This non-invasive nature of MRI makes it a safe imaging option for patients of all ages, including pregnant women and children. Additionally, MRI does not expose patients to potentially harmful radiation, making it a preferred choice for diagnostic imaging when repeated or frequent scans are needed to monitor medical conditions over time.
Yes, children can undergo MRI scans, and MRI is a commonly used imaging technique for pediatric patients. MRI is particularly valuable for evaluating a wide range of medical conditions in children, as it provides detailed images without using ionizing radiation, making it safer for pediatric patients compared to techniques like X-rays or CT scans. Our open style scanner is ideal for children as the process is less confining and therefore less intimidating.
Due to the huge demands on the NHS there are long wait times to receive and MRI, with some patients being prioritised based on how urgent the case. However, you can opt to pay directly for an MRI with Lyfe Health, and avoid the need to wait.
Some implants are safe and some are not. Certain devices (such as ICDs) cannot be scanned. Our team will check this carefully before your appointment.
