An MRI scan is a safe, painless and non-invasive procedure which captures high-quality images of inside the body. It’s an effective way to identify a problem or help confirm a diagnosis. It is widely used to view the joints, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and other body structures. In many cases, an MRI can provide peace of mind and give you the information you need to make informed decisions about your health.

Even with a referral, it can take a long time to book an MRI on the NHS. With Lyfe Health, you could be seen for an MRI as quickly as the next day with a radiology report within 72 hours*.

How it works

Booking an MRI scan at Lyfe Health is simple – no GP referral needed and no waiting lists. You can book your own scan in minutes either online or over the telephone. Following your booking, we’ll send you a short form to complete before your scan.

When you arrive for your scan, one of our expert team will go through everything in detail with you. Following your scan, your images will be read by a radiologist who will write a report detailing their findings. If you require your images to accompany the report, these can be provided to you on a disc.

If a follow-up appointment is required, we will book you in with one of our Consultant Physiotherapists.

*72 hours refers to working hours and therefore excludes weekends.

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It’s a non-invasive medical imaging technique that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed and highly informative images of the internal structures of the human body. MRI is widely used in medicine for the diagnosis and monitoring of various conditions, and for research purposes.

  1. Precision Diagnosis: Unlike traditional X-rays or CT scans, MRI scans provide detailed, three-dimensional images of your joints. This means that even the smallest abnormalities or injuries can be identified and treated effectively.
  2. Non-Invasive: No need for painful injections or exploratory surgeries. MRI scans are entirely non-invasive, making them a safe and comfortable option for patients of all ages.
  3. Early Detection: Detect joint issues at their earliest stages. Early intervention can often prevent more serious problems down the road, preserving your mobility and quality of life.

Our open MRI scanner provides a more open and less confining experience for patients compared to traditional closed MRI scanners. Unlike traditional closed MRI scanners, which can be narrow and enclosed, open MRI scanners have a more open and spacious design. They do not fully enclose the patient and are therefore more accommodating for patients who may experience claustrophobia or discomfort in a confined space.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is not harmful because it relies on the use of strong magnetic fields and radio waves, rather than ionizing radiation like X-rays or CT scans. These magnetic fields and radio waves are non-ionizing, meaning they do not have enough energy to break chemical bonds or damage cellular structures in the body. This non-invasive nature of MRI makes it a safe imaging option for people of all ages, including pregnant women and children. Additionally, MRI does not expose people to potentially harmful radiation, making it a preferred choice for diagnostic imaging when repeated or frequent scans are needed to monitor medical conditions over time.

Yes, children can undergo MRI scans, and MRI is a commonly used imaging technique for pediatric patients. MRI is particularly valuable for evaluating a wide range of medical conditions in children, as it provides detailed images without using ionizing radiation, making it safer for pediatric patients compared to techniques like X-rays or CT scans. Our open style scanner is ideal for children as the process is less confining and therefore less intimidating.

Due to the huge demands on the NHS there are long wait times to receive an MRI, with people often being prioritised based on the urgency of the case.  However, you can opt to pay directly for an MRI with Lyfe Health, and avoid the need to wait.
